WHAT ARE EXOSOMES?

Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles (EVs) that are secreted from cells throughout the body. The messenger RNA, micro-RNA, lipids, and proteins found in exosomes can stimulate numerous pathways upon cell uptake. The effect that these exosomes have on other cells depends on the cell and micro-environment that it originated from, leading to a variety of potential use cases in medicine. Clinical trials research is evaluating the use of exosomes for medication delivery to various parts of the body as well as for their support with the body’s natural healing and anti-inflammatory processes.

HOW DO EXOSOMES WORK?

Exosomes can facilitate cell to cell communication by transporting its biologic cargo and producing a paracrine effect. These secretory effects are currently being researched to evaluate their ability to possibly induce and support reactions including those involved with anti-inflammation and tissue regeneration. Oftentimes, these exosomes are found in very high concentration in tissues with cells including blood, bone marrow, placenta, and umbilical cord.

BENEFITS OF EXOSOMES

Exosomes are naturally occurring extracellular vesicles involved in cell-to-cell communication throughout the body. They carry signaling molecules that are being studied for their potential role in supporting the body’s natural biological responses related to cellular communication, tissue maintenance, and recovery.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR EXOSOMES?

Individuals interested in supporting their body’s natural recovery and regenerative processes as well as support tissue health may wish to discuss exosome-based options. Exosomes may help in conjunction with traditional approaches such as rest, activity modifications, medications, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and physical therapy. Candidates may be seeking an alternative to surgery or may already be recovering from surgery. A formal consultation with Dr. Yoon is recommended to determine if exosome therapy is appropriate.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WITH EXOSOMEs?

The consultation with Dr. Yoon will include a thorough evaluation and discussion of your current condition, goals, and available options. If exosome therapy is pursued, Dr. Yoon’s office will provide a pre- and post- therapy handout. Additional prescriptions may also include orthotics and braces, biomechanics evaluations, physical therapy, and other supportive measures when appropriate. Because each patient and injury is different, expected outcomes and recovery recommendations will be discussed individually. Follow-up evaluations will be scheduled to assess progress and help optimize the overall recovery plan.
