What is elbow impingement syndrome?

The elbow joint is a hinge joint that is comprised of the humerus, ulna, and radius bones. Cartilage is also found within the joint covering the ends of the bones. Repetitive hyperextension of the elbow can lead to inflammation and swelling of the joint in the back of the elbow leading to elbow impingement syndrome.

What causes elbow impingement syndrome?

Forceful and repetitive hyperextension (straightening) of the elbow may result in aggravation of the joint in the back of the elbow. This condition can occur with activities with forceful elbow extension such as throwing a baseball, weightlifting, and gymnastics.
